Many of New York City’s most famous landmarks we

Many of New York City’s most famous landmarks were raised in part by Mohawk Nation ironworkers, who came to be known among trades as the "Skywalkers."

Beginning in the late 1800’s, tradesmen from Akwesasne (which borders Ontario, Quebec, and New York State) and Kahnawake (near Montreal) migrated to the New York area to work on buildings including the Empire State Building, The George Washington Bridge, The United Nations, 30 Rock and more.

Generations of Mohawk ironworkers continue to put their stamp on the city. They helped build the (first) World Trade Centre in the 70’s, many were there to clean up the rubble when the towers fell, and came back to raise the spire on the new Freedom Tower in 2018.

During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, man

During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, many Asian tradespeople, including Chinese and Japanese immigrants, arrived in North America to take part in the booming construction industry. While discrimination made it difficult for Asian tradespeople to get jobs, they took on the daunting work of building railroads, bridges, and many landmark structures. Despite facing racism, segregation, abuse, dangerous (often deadly) labor practices and unfair pay, the AAPI community laid the initial framework - the transcontinental railroad - that has served as the blueprint for every major travel artery in North America. We travel freely from coast to coast, thanks to their legacy.
